Bird First Aid Basics Before You Reach the Vet

First aid for birds is about buying time safely, not trying to become the vet on the spot.

Good first priorities

  1. Reduce panic and handling stress
  2. Keep the bird warm and contained
  3. Control obvious bleeding if you can do so safely
  4. Call an avian vet or emergency clinic as early as possible

Keep this realistic

  • Do not force food or water into a weak bird
  • Do not keep experimenting while the bird declines
  • Prepare transport while you are making the call
  • Keep a small first-aid kit ready before an emergency happens
Important: if breathing, severe bleeding, collapse, or neurological signs are involved, the goal is urgent transport, not a long home-care attempt.
