Teaching Simple Visual Cues Without Pretending It’s a Bird Sign-Language Program

Birds can learn hand cues and repeated visual signals, but that is very different from needing an elaborate communication system.

What tends to work

  • Use the same movement each time for the same cue
  • Keep rewards fast and predictable
  • Pair visual cues with situations the bird already understands
  • Stop if the bird is getting confused instead of more fluent
Important: if a cue only works in one exact setup, the bird probably learned the context more than the signal.
