Questions to Ask Before Breeding Pet Birds

Breeding should never be treated like an “advanced system.” It raises welfare, housing, veterinary, and placement questions that many ordinary homes are not equipped to handle well.

Questions that matter first

  • Do you understand the species well enough to manage pairing, nesting, and stress?
  • Do you have avian veterinary support if problems arise?
  • Can you house adults and young safely if bonding changes or aggression appears?
  • Do you know where the young birds would realistically go?
Important: breeding is not just about producing chicks. It can create injury, aggression, neglect, abandoned eggs, chronic stress, and long-term placement problems.
